St. John's
 From Ken's Desk

February 14, 2010:

From Ken's Desk Lent starts Wednesday, February 17. During Lent, we prepare our hearts for the great Good Friday/Easter Celebration, celebrating the saving work of Christ. Lent is a season for introspection, prayer, repentance, renewal, and reconciliation. Traditionally, the church trained new converts during Lent, and we continue this practice through our confirmation classes.

In order to help us connect with the sacrifice of Christ, many have given up something important to them during Lent. However, this year Sandra and I are making exactly the opposite recommendation. This year, we’d like to invite you to add something to your life during Lent.

What is something you could add to your spiritual discipline that would help you live a holier life? What would help you be a better disciple of Jesus? What would put you more in touch with the love of God? How could you become more the child of God that God envisions? What one thing would make the most difference to you?

How would your life have to change in order to make this a priority? How could you make this work for you?

I suspect that with a little prayer and thought, you could make a list of things you could add to your life that would improve your holiness. But if you need some help, Sandra has provided a list of good ideas to get you started. You can find that list with the Lenten resources that you’ll be able to pick up at church.

Please join with us in making Lent a holy season, and this year consider adding something to your life. We hope you will want to continue this practice as a way of living into your lifelong calling to follow Jesus.
